An annual vacation with Mark=something I'll splurge on!
Nassau (April 2011)
Despite the fact I
once dressed as Madonna for Halloween (October 1985), I truly don’t consider myself
to be a material girl. Some of my
favorite wardrobe pieces are second-hand (often thrift store) purchases. Yup, buying second-time-around items is part of my contribution to keeping our planet greener, but it’s also where I find some of the most unique and
amazing finds as well.
Having said all
that, there are a few things I will splurge on from time to time (wardrobe and
otherwise). Sometimes those
items are used as well (generally vintage pieces). This means that even though I’m indulging
a bit, my splurge is somewhat more planet friendly.
Mindfully indulging is the icing on the cupcake. What mindful indulgence means to me is that I've given forethought to why I'm consuming or partaking in a product or service, as well as planned and budgeted for the purchase of it. This results in no qualms--only satisfaction on my part--for doing so. My favorite mindful splurges include:

That’s me, above, at a local Zonta wine tasting
fundraiser for our Women's Scholarship Program in June 2010—wearing TranquiliT. These items are made from bamboo, so they are eco friendly. I love how durable and chic this line
is! Check out the photo at the top of the page (in Nassau) and this past post to
see me wearing added lovely pieces from this awesome woman-owned and operated clothier.
A monthly
pedi...
The salon I patronize includes a fabulous foot and calf massage. I not only emerge from there with great looking toenails, I feel so very relaxed and pampered (definitely worth it!).
Gel
manicures...
I often do my own nails. Even so, when I do indulge in a salon mani—it’s gel only. Gel manicures last so much longer than the others (my last one looked pretty good for nearly three weeks!). A gel mani is well worth the added expense as the regular variety generally is good for about 5 days tops with me.
Vintage statement
jewelry items...
I recently purchased this stunning necklace on Etsy. It was the best $39 I could have spent for a statement necklace—top-notch quality—so unique—and vintage (another green purchase!)! Don’t know about my love of Etsy? Be sure and check out this past post.
Statement wardrobe
pieces...
This handmade faux leopard fur vest was purchased from Etsy. It is so lux and was far less expensive than others I had found at big box stores. An item like this, I envision myself wearing for years and years to come. Plus, it was purchased from a female entrepreneur who owns and operates a small business selling handmade goods (a great deal AND I'm helping to support a woman-owned business!).
A massage...
I strive to do this at least quarterly. Even a half hour massage helps work out those stubborn “kinks” and soothes my spirit, too! It's an issue of healthy body and soul for me. The collage above is from my art journal (July 2012); where I'd included a massage as part of my goals for that month.
What about you? We all have things we occasionally
splurge on. Would love to hear
what yours are!
Joy and peace this wonderful
fall Monday! T.
